amanda marie-ange

A night outing with Marie-Ange is in part an exploration for Amanda. Her goal is to get a good enough idea of NYC's layout so that teleporting can become easier. She needs an idea of what's where, after all. After dining at a place recommended by one of the visitors at the circus, Amanda steers her friend towards Central Park - oddly a place Amanda has not yet experienced. "How has your week been?" Probably something she could have asked at dinner, but she was too busy gushing over the city's sights.

*

"It has been a good week; I do adore the holidays." Marie replies, smiling brightly as she walks along her friend, arms clasping behind her back and eyes darting around to enjoy the sights. The city under snow looks so very pretty, even if it's definitely cold. "What of yours? Has it been busy at the circus?"

*

"A little quieter on Christmas Eve and nobody at all on Christmas. But that's okay. We knew that would happen." Amanda and the others still have a good time. And she's wearing all her gifts: new tuque, new gloves, new scarf! And black and white, to go with her jacket. She has a colour theme going, and she intends to stick with it!

*

"Quiet can be good sometimes, non? It can give you time to hear your own thoughts for a change… in a city so busy, that can be rare, I've found." Marie replies, smiling serenely — even taking a moment to do a little twirl as she walks — she's not wearing anything new; her clothes are all hand-me-downs, whether from friends or from thrift shops. However, she /has/ noticed Amanda's new duds. "You look very nice today, by the way. Much different than when we first met… and much warmer." Which is something Marie can always appreciate.

*

Amanda's cheeks redden softly at the compliment. "Thank you," she murmurs. "One of the women at the circus loves knitting and made everyone mitts and a scarf this year." She holds up the scarf to show just how intricate the design is - the semblance of cards is part of the pattern. She grins wide. "I forgot a gift for you at home, though. We may have to head back that way if we have time tonight."

*

Marie-Ange draws King Pentacles.

*

"There's no need to thank me, Mad— Amanda, it is the truth." Marie replies, eyes alit with mirth. "It sounds like a wonderful place to be… always surrounded by friends that are almost like family." If she hadn't found a spot to entrench herself in the city? She'd be really tempted to try to join it. The latter comment? That makes Marie blush in response, digging for her cards. Drawing. The King of Pentacles? The French seer's left to ponder that one for a few moments, left distracted as she speaks. "You did not have to…" she pauses, a little flustered. "…and I have been debating the perfect…"

The redhead's suddenly cut off as green eyes catch sight of something coming their direction. A truck, skidding around a corner and not slowing down. Driven by a man who's not being able to get the brakes to engage, and who's also honking frantically at the pair of women in order to try and get them out of his way — because he can't get out of theirs!

*

There's little time to think out a plan, not with the speed the truck is moving at. "Hold tight," she says to Marie-Ange, suddenly wrapping her arms around her friend, hugging her tightly. "I won't let you go." There's a bright blue flash of light that surrounds them and the duo appear on the other side of the truck, a few dozen feet behind them. That'll give him a shock, no doubt - if he can get his vehicle under control. She takes a moment to make sure Marie survived the trip - there might be a bit of… 'dislocation sickness', as it were. A bit of nausea, but she should be okay.

Amanda quickly turns in the direction of the truck, gesturing with one hand - the other she's using to keep Marie steady. Index and middle fingers up, the others (and thumb) curled in, she gestures: a circle, a triangle traced into the air. Orange light flares around the hand and in response the truck lifts off the ground - nothing impressive, only a few inches, but enough to stop its movements cold.

*

Some reactions don't always work right. For example, Marie's deer-in-headlights look. Some work perfectly. Clinging to Amanda when she feels the other girl's arms surround her. The hand steadying her is definitely something that's needed, as her knees threaten to give out from under her… but she's relying on Amanda's support to stay upright.

"That…" Marie trails off for a moment. It could be shock, it could be fear, it could just be looking for the right words in the language they share. "…that was incredible! I thought we were to be hit, but…" —then she looks for the truck. And she notices it's not on the ground. Inches or not, that's impressive to /her./ "…Amanda, are you.. doing that?" she asks, amazed. "Did you save us?" Marie's pretty sure she had nothing to do with it, herself.

*

It's only when she's sure that it's safe - which maybe takes a moment longer because really, she's never tried this before, and physics and magic… hell, maybe they interact weirdly? But she puts the truck down and nothing bad happens. Amanda breathes out a sigh of relief, for a moment leaning into Marie too. She smiles at the question, looking faintly embarrassed. But she doesn't answer it. At least, not directly. She reaches for Marie's hand, giving it a squeeze. "I'm going to make sure he was all right. Then… maybe we go back to my place and have some hot chocolate or tea?" She's trying to be casual about all this but really, this is not something to be casual about, right? Such a display! Her voice says it one way, but her eyes are bright, excited. Her heart's pounding too, and given the two women are using each other for support, Marie might feel that.

*

Marie's happy to oblidge; after all, she could've been street pizza if not for Amanda's intervention. But she wasn't. So she nods once, smiling. "Go, I will be fine." she promises, still a little unsteady but not in /too/ much danger of falling over. Her own pulse? As quick as can be. Her voice is out of breath. "…and oui, going back to your place sounds wonderful. I think… there has been enough excitement for today." she admits. She may be in a bit of a daze on the way, too; stunned by the events that just transpired. Of course, it might not be the end of the excitement at all, but only time will tell that.

*

Amanda approaches the truck, casting glances back at her friend. As she does so, the man exits his truck, using the door for support. He smiles wanly at Amanda. "Are you all right?" He nods and they talk a bit. Amanda has to assure him she's not upset, and he murmurs his assurances that he won't say anything about what happened. He's just grateful nobody got hurt - especially him admittedly, but in all, nobody got hurt and he's happy. Amanda nods and smiles before making her way back to Marie.

"He's okay," she murmurs. "Just happy he didn't hurt anyone." She offers Marie her hand again. "Should… I take us home my way, or…?" She squeezes Marie's hand again gently. "You might feel dizzy again if we do it that way."

*

"That is good — the roads can be dangerous this time of day." she opines, bowing her head slightly. While Amanda was talking, Marie was working on calming herself back down. Breathing deep, in and out. Slowly but surely reducing her pulse from the racing it had been doing moments ago. Smiling at Amanda as she returns, Marie allows her hand to be taken, squeezing Amanda's back in return.

"We can go your way." Dizzy isn't the worst feeling in the world, afterall. With little warning, Marie throws her other arm around Amanda and holds on tight to the girl. Because, y'know, last time she said to hold on, so this time Marie will also hold on.

*

The light flares up around them, bright and blue. Just like that, the duo is gone, and they reappear, it's within Amanda's little vardo. Home sweet home. There's already a fire going in the wood stove - put there by one of the circus workers, checked on regularly to make sure nothing is damaged, so the place is already nice and toasty for the two women. On reappearing, Amanda immediately looks to Marie to make sure a second teleportation so quickly hasn't made things worse for her. "Are you all right?"

*

For the redhead's sake? She's still a little wobbly, thus why she's not letting go of Amanda just yet. Her heartbeat's quickened again — the teleportation is certainly a certain kind of thrill all on it's own, even when she knows it's coming. But otherwise, she looks decent enough. "Oui, I am fine." she speaks after a moment. Slowly removing her arms from her friend — there's a bit of a stumble, but years of practice dancing keep her on her feet throughout it all.

"It is warmer than I would have expected!" she admits, looking around. Was it Amanda's skills that started the fire as well? As it possible Marie was displaced for longer than she had even realized? There's a few different questions running through the Lyonnaise's mind right now, but the most pressing becomes where to sit down — because sitting seems like a good idea right now, but there's certainly a few options.

*

"Workers go through to all the performers' homes and make sure they have fires going," Amanda explains, as she helps Marie find a seat. "Tea or hot chocolate?" she asks, as she helps Marie sit. The unspoken bit being 'ask while I do this'. Amanda knows questions are coming. She will answer what she can. "I do want to apologize about the dizziness. I'm not sure what causes it… Mother used to say it was because the body can't cope with changing locations so quickly."

*

"That… is rather wonderful." People going around to ensure that everyone's warm and comfortable, especially on cold days like this? That's definitely a plus. Amanda helps her to a seat and Marie melts into it, fingers curling around the arm rests. "Dizziness is a small price to pay considering we still live." she replies, before the curiousity running through her mind her to jump into the forefront. "So… and I do not mean to offend, but…" she trails for a moment, taking visual interest in her shoes. "…what exactly are you that you can do these things, Amanda…?"

*

Amanda laughs softly. "Your thoughts jump to something amazing, I guess? A faerie ceature of some kind?" She glances over her shoulder. Smiling, eyes bright. "No, no. I'm just as human as you or anyone else here at the circus," she murmurs. "But pick a word - witch, sorceress, wizard." Her shoulders lift in a small shrug. "It runs in my family - all the women, going back generations." She did mention too that tarot card reading went back in the family through the women. She knows how terribly.. stereotypical it all is. But she can't help it. It's the way her family has always been. "And I agree. The people I live and work with are wonderful, all of them. Especially to take care of us like this. To ensure all the performers are warm - us and the animals included."

*

Marie considers things silently for a few moments, it's certainly not the first time she's encountered magic. But at the same time? She can't be one hundred percent sure that magic is what it is; it's not impossible that she's a mutant, like Scarlett.. or something else entirely. After all, Marie still doesn't entirely know what she is. "Very impressive. I have met some magicians in the city… good people. We fought against the forces of Hell itself." Yes, she did say 'we', not 'them'. "To say the least, you are a woman who is full of a great many surprises, Amanda."

*

Eventually Amanda brings over a mug of hot chocolate, handing Marie hers as she sits down beside her friend. "You are brave to do that," she murmurs, "Whether you know it or not. Standing against demonic hordes…" Amanda shakes her head. "I am unsure I would have been so brave, allies or not."

*

"Not brave, only obedient." Marie replies, patting the pocket of her jacket where the cards remain. "The cards told me that it was my destiny to come to the aid of the Sorceror Supreme, and to serve as he wished. He needed defense against the forces of Hell, and… I did as I had to." Marie goes by the cards for everything, no matter how uncomfortable it might put her. "I… am not without power myself. Aside from being able to see through the fog of the future… I can bring the cards of the Tarot to life. They serve me as I serve them." if they weren't in a small space, she'd probably demonstrate. Instead, she sips her hot cocoa contently.

*

Amanda has had customers similar to Marie. Not consulting the cards so often, but coming weekly. Or every other day. One woman in England came daily, first thing as the circus opened. But as with everything, Amanda does not judge. "I will call it brave," she insists with a soft smile. She sips her cocoa, giving Marie's free hand a gentle squeeze. Afterwards, she cants her head in one direction. "You can? … I would like to see that sometime." She considers the possibilities for a moment. "I may have a private place we could use for the.. demonstration. Assuming you don't mind more teleporting. Or showing me." She smiles again, a bit embarrassed that she'd assume, and her cheeks redden. "But it would be just us, and you wouldn't have to worry about others seeing."
