nightcrawler illyana

It's never a quiet evening in Limbo. Never. This is quieter than most, however. Illyana Rasputina, the Queen of Limbo, is in residence tonight. Somebody has been popping in and out of her domain. She cares about this because it's entirely possible that said person is scoping the dimension out for takeover, or otherwise a danger to her reign — which, frankly, is tenuous enough as it is.

To this end, she's set a ward. The spell is not terribly difficult — a little frog's eye and newt's tail and demon's breath. The usual. But the idea is to bind the trespasser when they traipse across her dimension, lock them down — if only for a few minutes — so she can determine whether she's dealing with a true threat.

She waits patiently at her scrying pool, waiting to feel the barriers of her world penetrated and flipping idly through a copy of Fahrenheit 451. It's not as though there's much other source of entertainment in Limbo.

Aside from demon fights. But they enjoy those a little too much.

*

While he is usually more than happy to walk up and down the streets of New York, Kurt knows that he can freak people out, especially once night has fallen. So, he decided to just 'bamf' from the Church where he was working back home. It's not a far distance and he's done it many, many times before. Teleporting from the Church was easy, as it usually was. But instead of reappearing in the apartment he's caring for, he finds himself stuck, somehow. As if in a web.

He's never paused between leaps; it's always been going from one place to another.

This is disturbing. He tries to teleport again to get out of this before panic begins to start. He thought he was over it, past it; healed, but the last time he was held and couldn't escape was when he was torrtured as a child. It can't happen again, can it?

*

The creature that approaches Kurt is large — seven or eight feet tall — and built with muscles to spare. He's violet in color, eyes opaque white with no pupils. He wears a black leather vest and a biker's cap on his head, with a cigar hanging from the corner of his mouth. "The lady's gonna be here in a minnit," he says, voice gravelly and containing a touch of a Bronx accent. "She tol' me to tell ya sumpin'…"

The creature hesitates a moment, trying to remember what it was he was told to say. S'ym is an effective minion, for all that Illyana trusts him only as far as she can physically lift and throw him (not very far). He picks a gobbet of something from between his teeth with an elongated fingernail — more of a claw, really — and flicks it away before looking back at Kurt. "Right. She said to tell ya, if you don't want me ta eat ya, ya should just be cool." He considers Kurt for a moment. "Ya don't hafta be cool if ya don't wanna. I could use a good meal."

*

Oddly enough, a large violet creature wearing a biker outfit is less frightening than if it was a human approaching him. Maybe it's just weird enough that a large chunk of his fear and panic just dissipates. "Lady?" is asked, his own German accent evident, "Und it is not so easy to 'be cool' when I am trapped. Why am I trapped? Is it because you will eat me?" Cool or not? "I would rather not be a meal, danke. I am sorry. Perhaps I could bring you a pizza instead?" Once he's set free?

*

Bikers, notably, wear pants. S'ym wears a loincloth.

"All I knows is what she tells me," grunts the demon, "Yer trapped 'cuz you been comin' through her territory an' she wants ta know why. What's a pizza?" S'ym takes the cigar from his mouth and leans in to peer at Kurt. "Does it squirm?"

There's a flash of light, and the demon recoils from… a slim blonde girl. Her face could be next to the word 'innocent' in the dictionary. She's dressed like any other young woman her age: a red blouse with short sleeves, tight blue jeans, black shoes with low heels, her hair long and straight. She steps out of a circle of light and waves a hand at the demon. "Go find something else to eat, S'ym. Or don't. You're getting fat."

*

Nightcrawler pulls back some from the demon face as it gets closer to his, "Ah…no…it does not squirm. It is a…flat bread with sauce und cheese und…other things? Meat? Und what? Territory? I did not think I was moving through anything!" He just knows what he can do…not the how and why and apparently 'where' of it.

There's a blink at the flash of light and then the demon is out of his face and there's a girl. "You are the Lady who trapped me?" He tries to teleport again even though she's right there. "Can I please be set free?" While he's less panicked at the fact that Nazis aren't after him, he still doesn't like being held against his will.

*

"I'll let you go if you promise not to teleport off right away," says Illyana. "I can find you easy enough, but it's easier if you don't run away. I strongly feel that we need to talk." She's got a bit of an accent — Russian — but from the sound of things it's probably been a very long time since she's spoken her native language regularly. "You have been teleporting through Limbo, and I'm the queen here. I've got too many enemies to ignore that."

*

"I promise," is offered. He won't teleport -right- away…only if he feels threatened. Kurt watches and waits, offering as much of a bow as he can, taking her 'Queen' statement at face value. "I have not met a Queen before! Und I am sorry, I did not know I was…ah…teleporting -through- anywhere! Just from one place to another." Golden eyes look around as if trying to see if anything might look familiar.

*

Illyana considers this for a moment, then gestures, and the ward is broken. "You're free," she says. "Understand, if I want to I can cast that spell again easily. So please, don't make me regret undoing the first one. She approaches him, offers him a hand up. "My name is Illyana Nikolaevna Rasputina, and this is Limbo. Please don't feed the demons."
"

*

Nightcrawler stretches and crouches once his bare feet are back on the 'floor' of Limbo. His tail lashes a couple of times before he glances around again before looking back to Illyana and taking the offered hand. "I am Kurt Wagner, once known as the 'Incredible Nightcrawler'. Not so much anymore." He straightens some then, "Limbo? Not like the dance?"

Seems they heard Chubby Checker even in Europe. At the request to not feed the demons, he sends S'ym an apologetic glance. No pizza for him.

*

"Not like the dance," Illyana agrees. "More like the hell dimension." As a Catholic, it's entirely possible that Kurt has heard of it — or maybe it translates differently in German. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Wagner, and I apologize for the trap, but as I said, I have enemies. It is not a good idea to simply ignore a person teleporting through my realm without investigating."

*

Nightcrawler's eyes widen at that explantion and he looks around more, "You mean I have been moving through Hell?" Is that possible? Does that mean he really -is- a demon? A three-fingered hand reaches up to touch the gold cross about his neck as he tries to figure out just what all of this means. "Und a pleasure to meet you, Fraulein…ah…Majesty? But I did not know I was coming here und I am very sorry. If I could…figure out a way not to come here und disturb you, I would…" he's still trying to deal with the fact that he was trapped in Hell.

"You do not look like a demon…"

*

"One of the worst of them," Illyana says, glancing at S'ym. "I'd have killed him, but better the devil you know." But for all the innocence of her aspect, when she looks at S'ym there is hatred in her eyes. She is far from innocent, in the grand scheme of things.

"I am not a demon," she says. "When I was six I was kidnapped, brought here to have my soul ripped asunder and empower the demon lord Belasco. He kept me here for years — and I bested him in the end, exiled him from his own land, and took it for myself."

*

"Can you not leave? Do you -wish- to stay here?" And he's been coming here every time he goes from one place to another? How could he not know? Kurt goances around again before he looks back to Illyana. "I could take you back if you wanted to leave." Although she does seem quite capable.

*

"I come and go as I please," Illyana says with a shrug. "Better that I am queen here than another who would… abuse their position." And there's always that old saying… better to reign in hell, right? "I live in America with my brother and more of our kind." She pauses. "His and mine, I mean, but you do not seem demonic, despite your appearance."

*

'

*

"Is your brother a King or a Prince then?" Because royalty, right? "So you do not live here? That is good…" if it's Hell. Who wants to live there? "Kind?" he may not get that she's also a mutant. At the mention of his appearance, there's a sad little smile then as he looks down at himself, "Nein, I am not. At least I do not think I am. I can go into a Church so that is a good thing, ja?" It means he's not a demon?

*

Illyana makes a faint expression of distaste. Church is not really her thing, and God has never helped her. "No, I'm the only royalty in my family," she says. "I am queen by right of conquest, not by blood. My brother is a mutant. -I- am a mutant. And if you are no demon, you are likely a mutant as well, yes?"

*

"Ach, I still do not like that word. It makes it sound like it something bad to be." Maybe some people think it is, but he's learned to be all right with it. There really isn't an alternative for him. "I suppose I am if we are using that as the difference. I do not know that I am -not- a demon, but…I hope I am not."

*

"It would seem to me that it is a better word than 'demon'," Illyana points out. "At any rate, you are certainly not a demon of Limbo. You may use my realm to travel as you see fit, Mr. Wagner. I recommend you not stay long here if you have the choice. The natives are not the most friendly."

*

Nightcrawler does look pensive for a moment before he grins, "Ja, you are right with that. Touche." The offer to let him use Limbo as he sees fit gets a wider grin and he gives a real bow then, "I thank you, Queen Illyana. I did not know that I could even stop here, between places. I will do my best not to, but…please, if I can help you in any way, let me know?" Since she said she could find him, he won't patronize her by telling her where he lives. "Althhough maybe your friend here would prefer pizza over eating people?"

*

Illyana glances at S'ym, smiles wryly as she turns back to Kurt. "Mr. Wagner, if it doesn't squirm, S'ym considers it a poor meal. He will eat it, but he will not much enjoy it. This said, he has not had the opportunity to eat a human being in quite some time. I may have very little of my soul left, but I am not the sort to allow my subjects to eat my kind."

*

"Und we appreciate that…" not being eaten. "I do not know a pizza that squirms, however. If I find one, I will bring it here." Until then, S'ym may have to do without. Golden eyes look back to Illyana, "You should visit when you are in America. I am in New York…in Hell's Kitchen. Appropriate, is it not?" A hand lifts to scrub at his hair even as he takes another look around, "It is nicer than here…und…well…it would be good to get out of Hell some time, ja?"

*

"As teleporters, we go where we please," Illyana notes with mild amusement. "As it happens, I'm mostly around New York myself — or near the city, at any rate. I come here to tend to the demons and such. I do not live here. I did for fourteen years." She shakes her head. "I prefer the sun."

*

Nightcrawler's grin widens then, "As do I! Even though I hide better in the dark…" and he scares people in the daylight. "Well. I hope to see you in the sun soon, Fraulein Majesty Illyana. Again, I am sorry if I was going through your realm without permission. I have been doing this for…many years und I did not even know I was going -into- und out of a place in-between my travels."

*

"You did not know, Herr Kurt," Illyana replies. She doesn't know much German, but certainly she knows that much. "And it is not a problem — you clearly have no ill intent. I'm sorry for trapping you here." She has relaxed a bit, though he'll surely find that she's far more relaxed when she's not in Limbo at all. "I'm sure we'll find a chance to meet away from here soon enough."

*

Nightcrawler gives another little flourished bow "I look forward to it, Fraulein Majesty." And now he can say that he's met a real Queen! This actually tickles him quite a bit. Granted, she's not the kind to be in distress, but for this swashbuckling-loving one it's an amazing little event. "I have no ill intent to your place or your people or yourself. I will be careful not to stay long at all when I come through unless you wish to speak again. Although…" there's another glance around, "I think in the sun may be a nicer place."

*

"By far," Illyana agrees. "Even the surface of it." She does not like Limbo. But she's the best ruler it's got, and, frankly, she's not entirely sure she doesn't belong here anyway.
