Tangent says, "Ok guys. Again, really really sorry about my lateness. I set up my day to get home at 6:30 and am so dumb that I had no idea I was late. I thought I was 10 minutes early. Thank you for your patience and your forgiveness. Tonight we will cut the meeting off before Rogue's event in order not to take attention from her event. Thank you all for coming. Tonight we have four items on the agenda. If someone would like to see something on the agenda, we can talk about it and add it to the second item to make sure we hear it first. As we do this, please only one comment per round. Once we're done talking about something we'll go in the same order. Use +po (pose order) to see where you are. If you don't have anything, please say pass in order that we can hit as many items on the agenda as possible.

The first item is recruitment and I have a two part question. The first part is regards to size. Right now I think we're at a pretty good size (jokes about Mallrats in my head right now). We have lots of available characters, yet still have lots of RP. I consider that a good spot, but that's my opinion. My question to you is whether or not you would like to see our game be bigger. If so I have a plan to present to you next round, but I want to get your thoughts. You may fire when ready."

*

Nico says, "I'm not going to complain about a bigger game, but I don't think we need an active recruitment campaign."

*

Tigra arrives from RP Nexus.

*

Tigra has arrived.

*

Angle says, "I tend to be of a similar opinion to Nico, we've got a solid size, not exactly in danger of falling apart, but the old adage of 'the more, the merrier' always applies. Keeping our name out there is always important."

*

Square is more interested in quality than quantity. Thus, I am pretty pleased with our current state, because you are all awesome, and there are enough people that I'm not playing with the same 3 all the time. I'm not against being bigger, but I wouldn't want it at the cost of our theme/identity as a game or the quality of RP.

*

Exponent says, "Once we move to the new site, we can update our ad on various places and refresh peoples' memories about us."

*

Acute agrees with Exponent.

*

Exponent says, "Which we should do anyway because we are no longer just Marvel."

*

Logan says, "Exponent Johnson is right."

*

Maximus nods.

*

Sophie says, "I'm new here and a little unsure if I should be saying anything or not, but — First, I agree that there seems to be plenty of RP to be had. (And thank you all for being so welcoming, and letting me get involved right away!) But one thing I do see is that there are a number of 'big' characters that I'm surprised no one is playing. For all I know, only having been here a couple of weeks, I may have happened to land here during an oddball, unusual stretch, and this isn't typical. But, like, no Storm, no FF at all, this kind of seems odd to me."

*

Tigra says, "Some of those, like the FF, are difficult to fill anywhere. They're often a revolving door."

*

Thea admits she's been considering some bigger names, but the move and new job and stuff have come first. (I also want to thank all of you for being so blasted supportive while I've been losing my mind the last few weeks). But yes, more the merrier for me. I think we do a good job of quality people staying, and people that want to be jerks leaving in short order.

*

Tigra says, "Square Johnson is right."

*

Tony says, "It's nice to hear 'bigger isn't always better'. I think right now, 'if you build it, they will come' works, and word of mouth works. There are new people trickling in, and if we just keep the RP up, it should be fine."

*

Wanda says, "My thoughts on recruitment: let's make sure some key elements are in place to make the game approachable to new people. There is a learning curve to MU*ing that makes it tough for new people to get involved. Especially those who haven't been gaming for a while. There are a million different ways to do this, but possibly laying out some helpful starting points to ease the high bar of getting into a game.

I think having a few more souls regularly showing up would not bee a bad thing, and periodically marketing the game isn't bad, but let's keep the high standards of applications, events, and whatnot."

Edit: Bee -> be

Nyx arrives from RP Nexus.

*

Nyx has arrived.

*

Tangent says, "Okay! Well, it seems clear that people aren't too worried about numbers where they currently are. That's going to save a bunch of time. If it's something we continue to worry about we may come back to talk about solutions, but we can move on. The second agenda item tonight is an update and we will have to take some housekeeping measures. As many of you know, Obtuse left the game this week. She was involved in one supernatural plot that Wanda has volunteered to finish. I believe she was somehow involved in the Inhumans plot, but I was never really sure. So, if people have information about the Inhumans: who is running it, who is involved, if there's anything needed right now, etc….please mention that.

Also, please include any information about plots you are part of, running, or would like to see.

Currently I'm working on the first Avenger plot, which is open to any hero. We are responding to the terrorist attack at the World's Fair that happened earlier and has put the USSR and USA on the brink of war. Most of the Avengers believe that Bucky (RIP + sign of the cross) was not the sole reason that went down and that he's a scapegoat. They head to Madripoor this week to further the investigation."

*

Nico is still plotting her Limbo ideas. Needs to meet people. Working on that.

*

Angle says, "Alright, the meat and potatoes - my favorite part of the meal. Plots are a big part of the reason that I joined the staff, I love telling stories and helping them be told. I've got some ideas that are still in the beginning stages of formulation due to my current state of moving, but I also want to help anyone /else/ who has ideas they want to refine, or want a hand with running. Nico there can attest to this - she had an idea, told me, I ran it. So seriously, if there's anything I can do to help out with your plots in the makings, please, pester me until I whine and complain. Then pester even more. :)"

*

Delphyne arrives from RP Nexus.

*

Delphyne has arrived.

*

Exponent says, "Remember, +villains is there for you to use if you want to run an ongoing plot, as opposed to just a scene. You don't have to check them out but they are statted to make your lives easier. You can also just +sheet them as a reference."

*

Square says, "Angle and Acute are our awesome new vict- I mean, volunteers on the plot front. Please don't hesitate to reach out to them or to us if there's something you were working on that you don't want to slip away with Obtuse gone. :) That's as much useful as I have to say about plots. ;)"

*

Nyx says, "I'd love to see a street level crime and ninjas (or whatever) type plot happening in the Harlem/Hell's Kitchen/Mutant Town area. We have a number of heroes who aren't supremely powerful I think would do well getting into the guns , mobsters, and swordfights kind of stuff. The Hand, or the Mob families, or something else on the grittier. I think it'd be a change of pace from what I've seen so far, though. :)"

*

Acute says, "I am happy to help people bounce ideas and work out logistics for plotting. I do have information gaps so providing me with information I might lack is win. I'm a quick study! At the moment, I've just got an event on the table, and its potential for becoming a Thing will depend on what players do. Short version: something on the other side of reality is reaching through in people's dreams. Some of those dreamers are experiencing waking nightmares and doing erratic things. Not really a grid-buster. But there will be more coming up!"

*

Nightwing arrives from RP Nexus.

*

Nightwing has arrived.

*

Delphyne says, "Since I haven't said anything yet, I would like to follow up with what Nyx said. Personally, I'd love to have more "street level" stuff happening that could involve Netflix-Defenders/Bat-Family/Marvel Knights/Heroes for Hire level of conflicts. Which would be a great way to get the street level folks to team up and form something along those lines. :)"

*

Maximus says, "I am, as far as I know, sort of running something with Inhumans. Obtuse had offered to help me with it, as in helping Maximus get the sort of tech he needs to get in order to accomplish some stuff, but I was trying to get it done more ICly, and involve more PCs. I put up the notice on +wanted and did not receive any response though, and I have been politely turned down for relevant scenes with chars I have tried to involve, so that may need to be done through staff if I can't manage it through other PCs. But, I still have hope of doing it naturally through RP. If there is another Inhumans plot, I am unaware of it. As far as other plots, I do intend to run a series of D&D style events, dungeon crawl type of things, through Loki. And I have another plot I'd like to run that uses the villain Arcade. I could actually use that plot to help the Inhumans one. :) Oh, and I had talked to Steve about involving Maximus with the Avengers, through Crystal, but I don't know any status on that. I'd love to participate in the RP there though. That's pretty much everything from me! I'm looking forward to neat stuff, GMing and Rping and welcome anyone who wants to be involved. :)"

*

Thea is hoping to get more involved, be it Avengers or Defenders, or working in some capacity with Xavier's, or pulling a Wolverine and doing all of it. I don't feel like Thea could START a group like that, because people want a name they know, a character that stands out. But I'm very keen on being involved, and possibly apping another PC.

*

Danielle arrives from RP Nexus.

*

Danielle has arrived.

*

Sophie says, "Guess I'm up. Okay, haven't been here long enough to have much to say on the subject, other than one observation and one wish list item. The observation, first, is a positive one — I've seen plotty stuff going on that's 'open' and not meant just for a given faction or a given set of preselected characters. (I was there for the World's Fair thing and even got to do stuff!) I'm kind of used to things along those lines being cliquish, and it being so much not that way here is refreshing and great. And the wish list thing is just wanting to get more stuff happening with the X-folks. Which already seems to be happening a bit. :)"

*

Cassandra arrives from RP Nexus.

*

Cassandra has arrived.

*

Tony looks down the +po.. guess I'm next? I like RP. I like stories. I do. What I do want to caution because it's not fun is the 'character centered' play. While I am more than happy to support a character's story, I won't do it to the detriment of my own development or the growth of a story. That said, Tony is here, and he'll be out and about. Hope to get some business espionnage going, hoping to get a little friction with SHIELD… and I'm looking forward to getting into the fray. My schedule is settling in to a consistent time, and if I am not immediately online, there are those who can contact me offline, and I love @mail!

*

Wanda says, "Hi, I'm Wanda and I have an addiction to plots. You may remember me from such travesties as Mutant Riots, Spamalot the Knights of Caerleon, and that one time Quicksilver got abducted by a 17th century pirate prostitute in Port Royal. I'm a pretty heavy plot runner, and I tend to be focused much more on ongoing plots or linked-up one shots. That said, like many admins and participants have noted: tell me if you want a plot or scene. Spinning stories is the essence of what the game is about, a mutual effort dependent on open communication identifying what you want. I get that asking can be tough — this is my greatest flaw. I won't ask others for something for me, so pot calling out fellow kettles. Never a nuisance to make it known what you are looking for. Finding something meaningful to your character that spurs spinoff RP can be difficult, but it's rewarding. Drop +mail or something or pose.

Primarily what is a challenge on the plot front to me: getting news out to people. We have +events. Signups are hit and miss. Word of mouth is by *far* the best route by picking something that people seem interested in. +bbposts have very limited uptake on the "Wanted" board or news. I know Obtuse and I chatted a lot about this, and didn't come up with any particularly bulletproof solutions. How do you get people interested or encourage them to participate? Sometimes an idea doesn't have any interest for others, that happens. But even very general, open-ended stuff with a very easy comic bent sometimes gets no signups … and then I get like 10 people paging me about a rainbow interdimensional crab. Thoughts and feedback welcome. #ramble"

*

Danielle has nothing to add at this time. :)

*

Exponent notes that we plan, on the new site, to have code to announce events an hour before they start as a reminder. There's often slots open so people can join up at the last minute once they know about it.

*

Exponent says, "Also, there's no need to remember to type +events. They're right there when you log on so check out the list."

*

Hi! I'm Cassandra, and I like cheese with my wine thanks! I am an Ares/Taurus cusp, prefer tobacco to vaping, and am opposed to world peace because it's lame for comic adventuring! Lovely to meet everyone! I adore street level, but I am considering options for flexibility because kung fu can only go so far! I love character development, and as Tony observed plotcentric beats char centric for all parties involved where development is concerned. I'm good for running street level scenes if anyone needs a runner and staff aren't available!

I've not been here long enough to see what can be improved as yet, thus far it's been awesome to me but thanks for letting me show up ;)

*

Nightwing nods to Tony, "I am completely with him when it comes to the 'character centered' play. Despite the impression that some may have gotten from me, I also like RP and I like telling collaborative stories. That means all are involved and all are working to grow their characters within the scene. It -is- currently difficult without a Batman to tie all the Bat-characters together, but I'm willing to give it a shot if folks will allow me. But the key thing is communication for stuff like that and I'm happy to work on that with others if they'd like. That said, I do not feel comfortable running plots and events which is why I don't choose to ever lead factions. Ahem. :)"

"My schedule is a bit tricksy at the moment and it may be odd throughout the summer. I'm usually able to do light, albeit slow RP during the day EST but I am moving in a little over a month and begin rehearsals on June 1st for a show that runs until the end of August so evenings may be difficult. That said, I am more than willing to try and work with folks to schedule things."

*

Nyx and Delphyne, you guys make a good point about doing some street level stuff. I know a lot of us are clamoring and hoping for that sort of thing. Several of us have tried in the past and it hasn't stuck. Speaking as Daredevil's controller, I would love, love, love it. That being said, Cassandra ran something this week with the Hand. If we want to progress we should ask her if that's an ongoing plot so that we don't step on her toes. Once we see what she says, maybe we can combine heads if there's nothing doing and come up with something either run by players or by staff.

Max, thank you for shedding some light on the Inhumans thing. That is the plot I was thinking of and want to make sure you get some staff support. I threw the bone out there to Acute and Angle to see if they'd be interested in helping you out, so we'll see which one wins the death match. As far as Max, yes, Crystal did mention him to Steve. Seeing how Steve only remembers something really good about Max, and seeing as how we're kind of an emergency situation with the Avengers, he could definitely get on the roster. In fact, I can put you on the channel ooc and the board if you want in preparation for you joining. Thea, when I'm around as Tan, Cap, DD, Gambit, or Reilly, feel free to page me and I'll get you involved in the team (the Avengers).

That's the million dollar question, Wanda. If I had any advice from my time running things, it's that a lot of the bonds are built by the time you spend with folks in between plots. My most successful times when I was getting 26-30 people to events was because I had rp relationships witht hose folks before hand and they trusted me. That's what I told Obtuse about that topic, but YMMV

_ _ _ _ _

The next issue, and it's likely to be our last because we're motoring on towards Wanda's event tonight, is one of Mentors. Last time we met we talked about the X-men especially and how it was hard for new players to feel like they have a place and hard to get involved. One of the topics that came out of that was an idea of mentor roles for players. Basically these mentors would serve as people who would reach out to new folks, help them get set up on channels, help them to get caught up on important logs, and basically get them situated within a faction. We're thinking of letting anyone who wants to be a mentor be a mentor and it would be signified on the faction page so players would know who to contact. Does this sound like a good idea?

Real quick, the updates from the X-men: What I've heard from two friends on that team is that things have been really moving well since the new Xavier came on board. One thing they are looking for is more action scenes, which is something I think players or us as staff can work out.Already gave the Avengers update in plots, so we're good there. We have 45 mins before Rogue's scene so well have to be quick.

*

Nico says, "Pass."

*

Square says, "Our thinking was that 'mentor' would be a loose role. You don't have to play an 'important' character, you don't have to have IC authority, you just have to be willing and able to RP with new folks."

*

Exponent says, "And help get them settled in the faction. Or help them join it in the first place."

*

Angle says, "I'll keep it short and sweet - I'm very pro-mentor, yay for Avengers and X-men picking up on activity, and we'll be happy to torment you dirty muties soon. >:D"

*

Cassandra >.>

*

Thea would be interested in the mentor thing, but AFTER training on her new job ends and she gets her new, somewhat long term shift.

*

Thea says, "also, YAY avengers, yay more activity, just yay in general."

*

Acute will try to be a mentor-type source in her capacity as a staffer. The idea of player-mentors is appealing.

*

Nyx says, "I'd be MORE than willing to do that. All the time. Any time I am free to play."

*

Nyx says, "I was going to do something like that with Erik when I apped him anyway, though not as concrete."

*

Nyx says, "New people are great!"

*

Maximus says, "Mentors are totally fantastic and helpful and a great way to link people in and give someone to talk to that's consistent. I'd just say, try to pair new people up with someone that shares their playtimes and is on a couple nights a week. Happy to be one. I aint shy."

*

Exponent says, "We'll probably code something to designate who are mentors so new players can find them easily. We'll figure out something."

*

Sophie says, "Mentors sound like a good idea to me. Joining a new game is always a little intimidating. (And that's for a long-time MU*er like me. I can't imagine what it would be like to be brand-new-new, but I'm very^12 in favor of anything that makes someone who's never played before feel welcome. Back when I started, many (most?) new MU*ers were coming from a background in playing tabletop RPGs. Now, coming to a MU* is more likely to be someone's first real roleplaying experience outside of a single-player video game, or the shallowness of MMOs. New blood is good. It's deadly important if online roleplaying is going to continue to be a thing. We need to do everything we can within reason to make that first experience positive, and help new players ease in and want to stay."

*

Delphyne says, "Well, first off, thanks for the Xavier praise (that's an alt of mine) so that's appreciated. Second, I am definitely trying to be all the places I can be with Xavier, and he is definitely a character I enjoy playing and using him to mentor other characters, since that's pretty much who he is. Also, I wouldn't mind either Del or Carol being a mentor to folks, especially for people that want something street level/Amazon or Avenger/SHIELD-ish, respectively."

*

Wanda points to Sophie. "This is what I'm talking about in order to be welcoming and available to players. They desperately need help getting used to the commands, the text based environment, and just what we expect."

*

Danielle demurely passes anon hence. And junk.

*

Tony says, "Not much beyond the fact that mentors should pretty much be a standard action on a game, particularly on one this size. We're supposed to be welcoming, and when a player comes in with no ties, it's so much nicer when just normal, everyday peeps are like, 'Oh hey.. you cook? Let's see what we can do' rather than actually putting a name to it. I guess what it comes down to is not having to codify and put a name on just being welcoming. My $.02."

*

Wanda says, "Yes, mentors. A+++ mentors. Having someone available for a given time, especially those late nighters, Aussies, Europeans, is a big win for everyone in terms of lining up when you are around. It also has an attraction for those poor players who aren't in North America, get lonely, and wander off. Bounce around, be happy and welcoming, and feel like friendly sorts rather than unapproachable scary staff ermagerd.

Stick the list of mentors as an offshoot of +staff, or use a footer for '+mentors for player helpers' or something in it? Most players who are new to code/game may know +staff or +who or WHO but they won't know to look for another command.

Again, barriers to entry. Random thought, canvass the new folks to ask them what they feel they need more help with, what isn't easy, what is. Like that Zax fellow or Torunn, two totally new folks out of the blue. I've also seen a few guests running around between exits that don't ever say anything. Put things on the wiki to help new players easily navigate how to do things, as that's the biggest selling point. I'm not an expert on integrating new folks but as Sophie says, we really need to pull in people and not judge them for one line apps or whatnot. Teaching people is really a plus for us and essential for the hobby. That is all."

*

Nightwing has nothing more to add.

*

Tangent says, "Alrighty guys, that ends the official meeting. Looks like Rogue's event starts in 15 minutes. Thank you guys for coming. Like last time there's a lot in here that we can act on for staff and hopefully you'll see some stuff happen in the next couple days after votes, etc. Keep an eye on the boards. Thank you guys for coming, again. Hasablabug!"
