Starfire is currently sitting outside an ice cream parlour watching the world go by, slowly but surely making her way through a strawberry & chocolate cone. In an attempt to try and remain discreet she's pulled a simple white summer dress over the top of her regular alien attire. She'd almost blend in if not for the inhuman skin tone and the spiral of bright yellow mustard she's topped her ice cream with.

*

Lorna had to get off the Institute grounds and just go. She'd spent weeks training, studying, and conditioning on the obstacles courses. It was the first time she'd ventured out and didn't take a book with her. The green haired mutant had decided to not hide her natural hair color, and as a result found herself the item of gossip by disapproving matrons and the alike. A few muttered insults under their breath and made a point of avoiding her.

Still, at least the vendors were willing to take her money. As a result, she too, had an ice cream. She shuffled her purse around, holding a careful grip on her chocolate cone. Her gaze fell on Starfire on a nearby bench, and a smile pulled at her lips.

"Hey, uhm, is this taken? I just need to sit for a minute."

*

Starfire glances up and smiles. "Oh yes you are welcome to sit," she offers, moving a squeezy mustard container and a book on Human biology onto her lap. "I hope it is not rude of me to say, but your hair is a most unusual colour." She takes a lick of strawberry & mustard. "It is a very nice color though. I am surprised more people do not choose more exciting hair colours. It would brighten up the city a great deal."

*

Lorna settled down beside the strange young woman, her comments on her hair gaining a laugh. "Most people don't approve of it outside of my family. They think it's either a rebellious hair dye or something worse." She shrugged and nibbled at her ice cream. A glance spared over the mustard container and then a double take.

"Uhm. I don't mean to be rude but are … are you putting mustard on your ice cream?" She blinked repeatedly, and scratched the back of her neck as she struggled not to gape or stare.

*

"For some reason the store did not have a mustard flavor," Starfire says by way of explanation. "But I have had been able to add my own. It is wonderfully tangy. May I ask which flavor you decided to pick?" She has a little more ice cream and smiles contentedly. "I find people make similar comments when I wear my usual clothes. I am unsure why they evoke such strong feelings though. As I have seen people wear less to swim in. Why should water influence moral standards?"

*

Another blink and a pause, green eyebrows furrowing together. "Uhm mustard isn't typically.. uh… ice cream is usually sweet. Mine is chocolate, do you want to try it?" She held out the cone in offer.

"So yeah, I've never heard of a shop making that flavor per say." Lorna shifted on the bench and wrinkled up her nose in thought.

"The swimsuit thing is like.. water gets everything heavy and you can drown if you have a lot of clothes on. So if you want to swim and not get dragged down by the water's weight.. it makes sense that way. But people are also, well.. it's the idea that it's immodest for a girl to walk around like that if she's not swimming. Like the idea that she's the sort that parks in cars with boys.."

*

"If you are willing to share I would like to try," Kori admits, leaning over to try the chocolate. "Parks in cars with boys? I am unfamiliar with this phrase. Should a girl leave the car before it has been parked?" She tilts her head quizzically. "That does not seem very safe. I… should admit English is not my first language. Many of the terms of phrase confuse me."

Starfire ponders for a moment. "I find the pure chocolate to be very sweet. Most of the foods in my homeland are savory and the fruits we do have are often sour."

*

Lorna smiled and nodded, waiting till the girl tried her cone before she continued. "Well, it sorta means that ..erm.." She flushed and fidgeted on her seat. "It's slang. Not particularly flattering.." She scratched her cheek and wrinkled her nose.

"You know my sister doesn't get a lot of English sayings either. She doesn't speak it as her first language. I should be better at explaining these things." She exhaled a breath, shoving green locks back from her face. "It means that she shares affections for a lot of boys, which is heavily frowned upon." A pause, "I can't exactly say why though. That's complicated.."

"As far as ice cream though, yeah it's meant to be sweet. For sour though, there's a few options. Hey, where are you from? Europe or something? My family is from there.. technically I am.."

*

A rather self conscious looking Nyx is currently wandering opposite the ice cream parlor, staring into jewelry stores and shops that promise to sell fine gifts. The diminutive blonde has made some effort to clean up a little bit, swapping out her hoodie for a blouse and trying to pretend that she isn't a tense, insular disaffected teenager. It sort of works. people continue to stare at the pale girl simply for being pale and having bright eyes. Some of them think it's attractive, perhaps.

After a moment of staring at one of the shops Nyx sighs and then starts on her way toward the parlor itself, lifting a hand to rub her eyes gently. "I give up. Shopping makes no sense. I… Oh, hey Lorna. What's… up?" Now it is Nyx's turn to blink at someone. Starfire, of course. How does one not? She doesn't leer or stare at least.

*

A pause, followed by a frown. "The local courtship rituals are very complicated," Kori notes solemnly. "I have lived in several places. Most recently in.." Another pause as she waves at Nyx. "Monaco." Strangely there is no hint of an accent. "Hello, would you like to sit also?"

Starfire shuffles a little further to the side, stacking her things on her lap. A book on Human biology and a mustard container. "Back home people are a lot more comfortable when it comes to the topic of physical intimacy. But one of my new friends told me I should not expect things here to be like back home. So I am trying to adjust."

*

Lorna glanced up as Nyx arrived and smiled, "Hey, well, I needed to get out. So I got ice cream.." A pause and then a glance toward the young woman beside her. "Oh! Sorry, I'm Lorna by the way. This is Nyx. We go to school together. I never caught your name miss?" She continued to work on consuming her ice cream as it rapidly melted.

"And yeah, I know. That relationship stuff is very complicated." She grimaced, her expression turning downwards. "Pretty sure I've been ditched. Happens every time a boy meets my father." She sighed, and sagged against the bench.

*

"Relationships suck," says the albinoid girl who was snogging another girl in the Eight Ball… Yesterday. Politely! She shakes her head slowly and then moves to sit join the two of them, nodding at Starfire as she shuffles closer.

"HEy. Sure. I'll sit." Starfire gets a polite two fingered wave and then Nyx finds herself in a seat nearby. "People are jerks. Sorry to hear about it though. Does your dad to the 'don't you dare hurt my daughter' routine?" The girl asks, tilting her head slightly as she does and looking between the two slowly.

*

"My name is Koriand'r but you may call me St… Kori," Starfire says, coughing to cover the slip. "I believe my parents were considering an arranged marriage for me when I was younger. But since I have moved here I do not think that is likely to happen." She has a little more mustard & strawberry icecream. "Do they not measure up to your fathers standards? I have been told that measuring is very important in America."

*

A groan and Lorna shook her head, "No. My father is always trying to be nice to them. Yet they always kinda bolt as soon as they meet him. This is like the second boy too! I mean, to be fair plenty of students think he's scary too. Jean calls him Professor, even if he's not one. She said he's totally scary. I mean, I get how he could be, but he's not scary." She pouted and crossed her arms.

A glance was spared toward Kori and she smiled, "It's nice to meet you, Kori. Sorry for my boy drama. It's been frustrating. Were you really gonna be arranged to marry someone?" Her eyebrows shot up. "That's so totally prehistoric. Like wow. And I thought it was bad when my father seriously used 'courting' in a sentence."

*

"Nice to them and they still run? Wow. Your dad must be like the Hulk or something," Nyx observes sympathetically, shaking her head as she does. "I never introduce anyone to my mom. Just in case." She shrugs at that and then slowly shifts her weight in her seat before sighing softly.

"I'd've run if my parents arranged a marriage for me too. No thanks. This place is way nicer, don't worry." Nyx straightens slowly and looks over toward the ice cream shop. She is seriously debating one apparently. "At least Lorna's dad is nice."

*

Starfire laughs. "Oh I did not mind. It was a political arrangement with a general," she explains cheerfully. "But that does not mean I could not have romantic relationships as well." She shrugs. "I do not really understand why meeting your family would cause a potential suitor to leave."

She holds her mustard covered ice cream cone out. "Would either of you like to try some? The top is strawberry and there is also some of the green ice cream with chocolate pieces below. Or some mustard to pair with the chocolate?" She holds up the mustard container. "Your father works for a school but he is not a teacher? That is strange. Which subject does he teach?" She sighs again. "It seems many of the friends I make have romantic problems. One of the first American men I met asked if I would keep him company overnight because his mate had… I believe he said something like gone away to live underground."

*

Lorna nudged Nyx, "Are you telling me you've never seen my father? Flies around in armor? Was on TV? In the newspapers? Goes by Magneto?" She arched a brow and shook her head. "He's not scary at all like the Hulk. Honestly, my sister Wanda is way scarier. But I dunno, my father doesn't teach. He just comes and goes, I guess.." She had after all trapped Julian in an alternative dimension when the boy had freaked out once.

"Yet the last time I saw him was dinner with my father. He hasn't even called once since then." She pouted, and glanced toward Kori, blinking. "Are you a Princess or something? Cause wow. How do I keep running into people with pointy hats and stuff? Geez." She muttered and shook her head. "You know, sometimes I wish I had an arranged marriage, because then I wouldn't have to worry about him running away from my family." She wrinkled her nose.

"Then I remember all the people I know that are into that and it gives me nightmares." She shuddered and made a face. A glance was spared for the mustard ice cream and she shook her head. "Nah. I'm good thanks." She finished off her own ice cream, and at Kori's tale about men shook her head again.

"Ew, sounds like that guy was a dog." A sigh followed, "I should head back to the school."

*

"Wait… Magneto's your dad?" Nyx is new at the school and it shows now. She blinks a few times and then nods slowly, looking between Kori and Lorna a couple of times. She shifts her weight slightly from left to right and then takes a deep breath.

"That's just weird. Don't worry. You'll find a guy who isn't a complete asshole sometime," Nyx soothes quietly. She continues to regard the pair for a second and then looks over at the ice cream one more time. Torn. Yes. Finally the girl takes a deep breath and nods once. She is about to make a decision when presented with Kori's ice cream.

"I- um. No thanks. No mustard chocolate or ice cream…. Ha." Nyx's brows both rise as she notes this with some incredulity, her expression shifting from confused to outright disbelief.

"I'll catch up soon.. Take care, Lorna. Introduce guys to your dad right away so you can thin the herd." She waves.

"So… Kori. Um. Mustard. On everything? Or just sweets?"

*

"Not of Monaco but yes you could say that. Although I am currently no longer in the order of succession," Starfire explains, putting the mustard down and wiping at her eye. "I do not believe anyone in my family had a pointy hat though." She has a little more ice cream, this time the mint choc chip (and mustard). "He was quite friendly, he explained that size is everything here. Which I was not aware of."

"I like mustard," Kori replies, as if this explains everything. "Much more than some other things I have eaten in America. I was very disappointed with the flavor of soda called 'Baking Soda'."

*

"Size is not everything," Nyx replies, shaking her head. "He was trying to get you to do physical intimacy things with him. Right, like you said. And you know how we're not as open about that stuff as your… kingdom or whatever was… Well. It's not considered very nice to try to talk people who are new in the area into stuff like that." She shrugs her shoulders slightly and then twists in her seat, tilting her head as she does. "People like that will always be friendly though. And don't eat baking soda!" Nyx gestures at that, shaking her head. Um. Anyway. Baking soda isn't soda. Have you tried coca-cola yet?" Nyx is normally difficult to discombobulate but even she is staring at this point. Dim inflections of horror in her facial language from the albino girl sitting across from a little Space Princess. Little wonder, really."

*

"I have tried a type of cola. It was very very sweet and fizzy. I preferred the bottle of beer I had which was also fizzy but much less sugary," Starfire replies cheerfully between licks of her icecream. After a few moments she seems to notice Nyx is perhaps a little suspicious and quietly adds "I… usually do not really need to eat solid food. Instead I absorb light. I hope you do not find this… shocking or offensive."

*

"Offensive?" Nyx just blinks a couple times and then nods very slowly. "So you're a mutant too," is the ultimate conclusion she comes to as she chews on this thought. "Huh." then the girl shrugs and leans back in her seat. The shadow of Kori's icecream collects together into a sphere and then reforms, changing its shape until it takes the likeness of a hummingbird. Physically realistic in appearance it is still perfectly black for it is a shadow. the bird hops about on the table. Nyx shrugs. "Nothing to be worried about, promise. I wouldn't just tell anyone- oh, Lorna told you about the school, right?"

*

Starfire tilts her head. "She did not mention the school before you arrived," she stares blankly. "The one her father visits? That is all I know. I have already been fully educated, it is just my knowledge of the local culture which is lacking." She watches the shadow and laughs. "That is very fascinating. Is it magic? The other day I was in Central Park and a man told me magic was real. And then dead people started trying to bite us. It was quite the adventure."
