LATVERIA
6:54 PM LOCAL TIME
They got in through a sewage drain. Thankfully, it was turned off and unused so the Avengers still smell pretty good all things considered. That pipe led to a shaft. That shaft led to a grate. That grate led to an electrical closet that opened up into an upward set of stairs, where all 10 of the Avengers on the mission have made it.
"Alright, gang, let's go through the plan again," Steve says. "We'll break into two groups. Our goal is to get to Doom, incapacitate him, and make sure those three million Doombots don't invade America to take over our nuclear arsenal. No mistakes. We need to win today."
"The team is splitting up into two. We can communicate through radio. I have this old map that we got from Roche. Be careful, though. It was years ago when this place was built and things might not be how they appear here."
"No matter what happens, realize that this mission must be successful. If you get knocked down, get your tail up. If you get hit, soldier on. The ramifications of what happens if we lose here could mean the end of the world."
"Finally, remember that fighting together and using teamwork is the name of the game. By ourselves we'll all die here. But together we'll prevail."
"Everyone ready?" There's only one door, so both teams are headed into the room as soon as Cap kicks the door down!
*WHAM!*
*
Nexus hangs in back: he knows his strengths and he knows his weaknesses, and while he isn't useless in a fight, his usage in this scenario lies elsewhere. But since arriving in Latveria, something has… changed in him. He seems calmed, more confident, more … more. Its difficult to tell. But he follows up the stairs and reaches out with his mind, searching for technology to touch and bind to his will.

Cassandra Wu-San was sent in as part of a reinforcement team from the X-Men for the mission to guarantee the success of Avengers. She silently follows the crew, lurking in the shade as guards their advance from behind. Her movements are very near to utter silence, fitting given she is garbed after the fashion of a ninja. Her leonine motions evoke a prowling predator, though she remains close enough to avoid losing sight of her comrades.
*
"I shall remain in the front." Diana says, her cool tones penetrating the harrowing yell that Captain America puts out. "You are all weak of body. Fleshy children amongst steel and metal.." Which could have been taken as a compliment, but insults aside, she approaches the front of the line, shield and sword drawn prepared to do batthe with whatever deems to attack the Bravo crew first.
*
Three million doombots. Three million monsters, eager to bring down the stars and stripes. It's almost enough to make a girl poignant, the same girl who occasionally pulls out grates and bends metal looks by a wiggle of her little finger. Of them all, Scarlett looks the least impressive. "What Captain America says is true, we are stronger together than apart," she murmurs to the others, training her gaze over the room ahead when the door comes down. Immediately she falls in behind him, scrutinizing for any hint of defense, mundane or occult. It helps having the teachers she does to recognize the latter. "In my case, literally. Should things go poorly or we are overwhelmed, grab onto me. The experience may not be polite, but it may keep us alive."
*
Log edit: metal /locks/
*
"Once we get in there, Marvel," Steve replies. If they take a hit entering the room, he'd rather it be him than her. This team can still survive without Steve. Probably not without Carol. He kicks down the door.
< Room 5>
This wide open space looks to be a testing area for Doombots and other Doom creations. Moorings at the side of the room hold many Doombots in place as they await their commands. Burn marks on the ground show where some have met their untimely end.
From either side of the room, Doombots begin to shift to life. They look just like Doctor Doom, except the space behind their eyes looks dead and glows a deep green.
"Everyone look out," yells Cap as he covers his team in the door jam as the laser blasts begin to burn against his shield. He runs out, straight towards the first one, just as it comes away from the wall and smashes his shield towards its head.
Sizzling lasers and acrid smoke begins to fill the room as the beasts begin to take fire on the Avengers. If we were hoping for coming in unnoticed, that was clearly out the window sometime before.
Nexus stays back and reaches out and can feel the energy of the machines here in Latveria. There's, something in the way, however. It's, not mechanical. It feels natural. But dark. Natural and wrong. Something is blocking him from just taking control here and there and it is something evil.
*
Rogue has partially disconnected.
*
Nexus frowns: the pale circuits on his skin become white and even give off a little light, but he shakes his head, frowning, "Something is blocking me. I can not seize the machines. I am afraid I will be of no use as long as that continues. It is… not a technology that blocks me, though. It is natural and evil." But he keeps to the back still, following Rogue and Diana.
*

*
Cassandra Wu-San is frowning as well, but for a different reason. Her skills are of no avail this far out and under fire of this sort. Lasers are not bullets. Machines don't move like people. She can't predict their fire. To this end, she'll follow behind Diana and do her best to stay something other than crispy. She's thoroughly impressed with the way Diana moves, the certain motion of an experienced warrior. The Captain got a similar look for the same reason. Her youth is showing.
*
There was no issue nor hesitation as the lasers start flying. With Cap running off into the fray, Diana dashes in with a low run, attempting to avoid the lasers that do happen to fly in her direction or that she intercepts with a raise of her shield. That low run breaks off into a pivot and a twirl, a hard swing as if she were throwing a discus from the middle of her body and out towards a doombot that dislodges itself from the wall with a snapped aim towards the neck. If they were waiting on a cue to fight, the actions of the two would have given them the signal.

Scarlett has a moment of wordless despair for the incipient violence unleashed upon them all, her expression mirroring that frown on Nexus' face. "Are we talking dark, ichorous tentacles brand of evil or the horror lurking in the heart of men?" A question upon her lips as she assesses the patterns of the lasers to determine those frustratingly out of reach for Captain and princess. Soon enough the liquid grace imparted by yoga simply becomes part of the melody of clashing lights and burning, passing bots around her. Those concentrating on the Captain's shield, preferably airborne, serve as her primary targets, and she leaps neatly off the wall to spring at one of them. Grabbing one of the bots from behind, preferably, gives the best opportuinty to whirl and fling it violently at one of the others.

ALPHA TEAM
Captain America's two hand slam hits the first Doombot straight away in the neck. It stutters and sputters and sparks begin to fly as it hits the ground. Using his foot on its chest for a brace he yanks hard and pulls the shield out, just in time to block another shot.
Carol burns ahead and sends a volley of shots that inexplicably miss their targets. Worse, she takes huge energy streams from two Doombots. Immediately she knows she's taking on too much energy too quickly and in too enclosed of a spot. Much more of this and she will overload.
Firestar damages one Doombot and singes another as she flies above the fray. Mistral finishes off the two Doombots that Firestar hit.
Worryingly, Firestar's making the room much hotter and Carol begins to emit laser beams as she overloads.
Kai, meanwhile, tries to drive his blade between the eyes of a Doombot. The machine pivots, expertly, and uses the elf's weight against him, driving him into the ground.
BRAVO TEAM
As Nexus reaches out with his powers, he can begin to feel the creases. Weak points like seams of power, banding the blocking together. Just as he's about ready to rip it open and get inside, a laser bolt shoots into the hallway and almost incinerates his face.
As Diana approaches, she'll find that these doombots are more savvy than she might have imagined. Her arm is knocked straight up in the air as her blade whizzes by the bot. A follow up shot drives the bots other hand right to her chest and knocks her backwards.
Rogue does a flip move and throws one of the bots, but it misses the other. The first does slam onto the floor, but it's still mobile. The second begins firing at Rogue, though it shoots wildly and misses her easily.
"Diana!" Steve yells as he holds his shield out. He looks to catapult her with all of his strength towards one of the doombots if she can get to him in time!
*
Lasers? Lasers are bad. He dodges, but in truth it isn't his dodging that saved him— its likely luck. But he crouches down then. "I have no experience with anyting like this, Scarlett. I simply get a sense of evil. I will attempt to fight it. It is not… uniform." The circuits flare and suddenly he becomes twice as fast as he normally is — which is fast indeed, though not quite superhuman due to his exposure to pollution over the last week — at the cost of his strength being halved. He dashes towards one of the machines as he concentrates on it, focusing his attention down on it and trying to take it for his own. Perhaps proximity and focus will help where trying to seize it all failed.

Cassandra Wu-San has had her moment to reflect upon how these machines move. There's a certain timing to it all. This may be good as she can't just sit back and continue letting Diana handle everything. Balling her reinforced fists with a tension that ilicits the sounds of popping knuckles, she'll start to follow her into the fray lashing out at perceived weakpoints. Joints and their glowing eyes will be prime targets. When she can, she'll even drive them into each other under their own momentum. She's only human, doing what she can is what she does.

Bad throw! Bad throw! Diana could already feel the pressure beneath thick skin as her arm was knocked asunder, taking her a touch off balance and further by the blow to her chest. Her feet waffle against the ground as she slides from such a powerful blow, her foot striking out backwards to even out the weight, her hand touched upon the ground and a lean forward to slow herself into a poised, yet ready position. There was a little smirk through the twinge of pain, where one would be fit to monologue through this part, her name is called and snaps her into action. Just the gesture alone was enough for her to dash towards the star-spangled avenger, and with a kip up and a plant of both feet towards the shield, she uses that as a boost to kick off in a rapid, drill like-twirl in hopes of taking down.. or taking hits where Nexus and Cassandra -may-.

Taking no chances, the redhead pirouettes in the air with momentum going one way with a doombot and a miserable, laser firing incarnation of Latveria's favourite son going the other. If it misses wildly, with any luck it's going to nail something else with how fast Scarlett can execute a precision turn at speed. Reversing course, she jags up and plunges straight down over the bot Nexus faces down. The impact brings all her strength to bear, a hell of a lot, with the aim of slamming and pinning the thing down. Failing that, if she misses, a taekwondo-inspired flying kick might do the trick of knocking it off balance. It's nice to have options.

BRAVO TEAM
Nexus is locked in a struggle with some sort of magic in trying to get access to the machines. So far he's unsuccessful, and surely must be getting frustrated. He knows he's more powerful than this magic and that there is a way, here.
Diana leaps and corkscrews onto Steve's shield. The latter times it perfectly and slings the Themysciran into a Doombot and it explodes into a thousand pieces.
Rogue simply tries to do to much and take on too many adversaries at once. The attention gets split and so does the effectiveness. The first bot gets thrown, but doesn't get destroyed. The second bot gets into a quick fisticuffs with her. After a few quick moves it grabs her by the throat and slams her into the wall.
ALPHA TEAM
Firestar wisely focuses on one Doombot this time and blasts him to smithereens with a concentrated blast of microwave energy!
Kai slams a knife into the throat of a Doombot. Immediately the functionality begins to suffer and it slows down, becoming easier to hit.
Sophie takes down the next target, but is unable to finish it off in total. It's down, but it'll be getting back up.
The more enemies Carol tries to take on at once, the more Doombots focus more and more energy on her. Worse, she's unable to hit any of them. Overcome with the overpowering of energy, Carol loses consciousness and falls to the ground.
And then she begins to pulsate.
"Marvel is gonna blow! Everyone back into the hallway!" screams Cap as he tries to block his friends from the energy blast with his shield.
Inside, Cap is worried. Too many of the Avengers are trying to do too much on their own rather than together. As a result there is too much that's not working here. They needed more time to train, clearly.
*
Since proximity didn't help, Nexus begins basically just… running around. If a robot seems to be facing him, then he makes a point to get run out of the way. With his speed, he hopes he can manage to do it. It does take some of his concentration away from the technopathy, and perhaps that's not helping: but he presses, feeling with his mind whatever it is this shell is that separates him. He seeks to those weak spots and he pushes: he communes with the Core his experiences to let it analyze and look for a pattern.

Cassandra Wu-San is surprised when she figures out how tough their defense is. Her hands are accustomed to punching metal, but this is harder than what she trains on. What's more, once they acknowledge her she finds herself paced as her attacks begin to find air.
Cassandra Wu-San slows her roll with that discovery now, moving to Diana's side rather than leaving the Amazon to it. Singling out the nearest one to her, she'll slide down low with her legs scissoring to take it down while Diana's recovering.

This was good, the slam into the offending Doombot crashes it to the ground, shattering it into pieces. Diana's fists hurt, and landing upon the ground with a quick scramble up allows her to snag her sword from it's fallen position to smack against the shield she carries to beckon more forth. She was ready. And yet, t'was the call of Cap that gains her attention yet again, Ms. Marvel was about to blow. This wasn't good at all. With the team slightly scattered and Cassandra at her side, the call to retreat was there, but she wouldn't allow the young woman to linger. "GO!" She does not shove, only urges, hoping to usher the rest out the door to leave her back to the blast if need be, but nay. That would not be the case. For as soon as there was an immediate retreat, Diana slams her sword into her sheath, turning to face the blast with a raise of her wrist to slam them together with two clicks, erecting an invisible shield to brace and protect the team. (If shit goes sideways.)

A wall has never been useful, totally, at stopping a girl who can fly. Scarlett may be held by the throat, but her aikido break for its choke hold works well in motion, airborne. Hopefully. The doombot holding clutching at her had better be strong. She sweeps her arm up from under the mechanical one clutching her. Putting her hand to the side of the bot's face while twisting it offguard is meant to break its clasp and point its laser-eyes at the ground where it won't put out anyone else's.

BOTH TEAMS
Nexus is able to get root, so to speak as he mentally pushes the magic shielding out of the way. He has access. Not full access to the millions of Doombots in Latveria that are ready to take off for the invasion, but he can feel the Doombots in this castle.
Sophie fires, but is unable to hit as her shot fires wildly. She is, however, able to get behind Captain America.
Batgirl dips down low to help Diana and uses a pair of scissor legs to bring down one of the bots onto its back. It's still in commission, but it will take a moment to get up.
Carol begins to overload, sending all of her energy out. Steve does what he can to push the remaining people back into the hallway and cover them with the door and the shield. Firestar does her best to contain it but it's too much and it overpowers her as well!
BOOOM!
A large amount of energy shakes the hallway at its foundation, but there are no more laser blasts coming from the testing room.
Kai is safely behind Captain America's shield and suffers no damage. Steve's shoulders slump down and he looks.
Shit goes sideways. Luckily, however, Diana is protecting Cassandra with her block of the energy that sends a cocoon back towards Carol's energy.
Rogue and the Doombot are locked in an epic battle of strength with neither one totally overcoming. By the grace of God, the incineration takes out the Doombot, and while nailed hard, Rogue is going to be alright. Even if the sight of seeing Doom's face melt away into an exoskeleton will probably forever haunt her nightmares.
"Everyone alright?" Steve walks into the smoldering room to find the wreckage of the doombots and Carol and Firestar lying there with Carol's hair full of soot. Diana has Cass protected, and
Rogue looks like she's going to be fine. He reaches down to give her a nudge. "No sleeping on the job, Marvel. We have a world to save."
5r"Alpha and Bravo teams spread out. I repeat, you're stronger than these guys if you work together. You try and take them on by yourself or all at once, we're going to be dead before Doom has his dessert."
"Alpha, come on," he snarls as he leads Alpha team to the Northeast door that leads to number 2 on your maps. "Bravo, you guys head that way." Steve doesn't bother to stop and search the room. Everything in here is probably toasted anyways.
*
Finally, Nexus' mind becomes one with the doombots: well, some of them at least. "I have access." He could shut those he's connected to down, but that would leave them able to function. Instead, he tries to have those who he touches have their friend-or-foe protocols switched to see only themselves as their enemy. "Destroy." he says as he thinks the command as well.
*
Rogue arrives from Out <O>.
*
Rogue has arrived.
*
Amongst the wreckage there's smoke and sparks. Team Alpha heads towards the Northeast, leaving Team Bravo to themselves. They have no idea, for sure, which way to go, other than their best guesses and intuition. The sound of battle can be heard up through the door to the northeast.
*
Cassandra Wu-San heads to Out <O>.
*
Cassandra Wu-San has left.
*
Looking around, Nexus's skin is alive with the circuits, and he closes his eyes a moment, nodding to the south door, "It's cleared that way, but its a start. Let's search it out and see if we can find our way to their control center."
*
The large testing facility gives a particular sense of scale. Scarlett drops down to tear out one of the hooks for a bot if she can, preferably any kind of rope or canvas binding or chain to go with it. What she intends to use that for is probably similar to what Doom used it for himself: anchoring something, or carrying it. She floats off the floor, following after Nexus. "Good. The sooner we reach that location, the closer we get to stopping the United States from becoming slagged politically and geographically. Trouble erupts and we need to get out fast, grab the hook and I'll fly you back."
*
Rogue and Nexus wander south into room number 12. Immediately it's clear that the room is some kind of dojo or practice room for martial arts. Many different types of weaponry line the stone walls, hung neatly and in perfect order, just the way that Doom likes it. There is a thick mat in the middle of the stone floor, clearly to soften any falls. There are some markings upon it, as well, boundaries for martial arts competition.
But none of that seems terribly odd. What does is the floating blue rod that hangs in the middle of the room.
*
Nexus pauses, and tilts his head to regard the rod thing. He reaches out to try to touch it with his mind, and even goes out to get a pair of staves from the weapons at the wall and… then he tosses it at the floating rod, before holding said stave up defensively. "That is most unusual."
*
"Floating rods? Do you imagine the source is scientific or something beyond our understanding?" Scarlett barely grazes the ground with the soles of her boots. Obtaining a weapon or two along the way from the racks to go with that hook is not her preferred choice, but practicality all but requires it. A pair of escrima sticks for herself; then a katana. Having a measure of proficiency with either helps. "Do you sense anything off of it?" She watches Nexus toss a weapon at the rod, and nods approvingly, prepared to knock him out of the way should it prove overly cranky about having something hurled at it.
*
Diana arrives from Out <O>.
*
Diana has arrived.
*
Nexus hurls a stave, and then something odd happens. As it approaches the bluish energy surrounding the staff it fizzles a bit. I mean to say that it looks fuzzy, and just as it is about to pierce the rod itself, it disappears entirely. Try as Nexus might, he cannot reach the rod, and would likely conclude it not to be mechanical in nature.
*
Maximus heads to Out <O>.
*
Maximus has left.
*
That's… weird. The technopath shakes his head slowly, "If it is any kind of technology, it is either beneath even your primitive scale— unlikely considering the effect— or so far advanced that it puts even Kree technology to shame. I do not think it either." Pause, "It is beyond my ability to reach." He approaches and frowns, "I don't like the idea of touching anything that tries to touch it— that disappearing effect might be transitive. Should we explore further and consider this just a mystery, or do you have some ability to comprehend it?" He nods towards Room 11 as his suggested next spot, if they decide to move on.
*
The disappearance of any kind of object causes Scarlett to raise her brows. "Check that off the list of taking with us. Avoid it. I would impress upon ourselves the necessity of continuing. Should we encounter nothing else at all, then we can test the possibility of hurling a cup of water on it." The redhead skims a final look around the dojo and orients herself upon the doorway to room eleven indicated by Nexus.
*

*
Room 11.
This room doesn't seem to be a room at all. Upwards it disappears into blackness—there is no ceiling and the temperature seems to have dropped a few degrees. The ground, rather than the stone of the rest of the castle is here a metallic grating, and in the corner, there is a control panel with unmarked switches.
*
Nexus hesitates, looking around this strange room, "I agree." he replies back to Scarlett, but he is curious, "Why water?" Once in the odd room he heads straight for the control panel, holding his hand out as his thoughts reach out to try to understand what it connects to and what would happen if its various buttons would work.
*
Ever had a sense one of those places is utterly dangerous and not worth approaching lightly? This is one of them. "Water sometimes interacts with dimensional rifts or physical objects. Pour some on cesium and watch what happens. However, the path would give us an idea if the bar reacts only to solids, liquids, or living organisms might be exempt." Ideas in speculative tones are provided at a murmur, and the redhead squints into the shadows. She stays at the doorway, still armed, and stares up, wayyy up, beyond what her eyes can see. "Flying to the top does have the feeling of a fool's notion."
*
|ROLL| Nexus +rolls 1d100 for: 22
*
That terrible and irritating blockage that Nexus is feeling has happened once again. It's some sort of mystical shield, and though he is stronger, he is still blocked.
*
Who knows what Diana was doing before she catches up with the two, bypassing the rooms that Nexus and Rogue had been in, not dilly-dallying around but wanting to get through to the end of the maze to bash shield against face, screw diplomacy. "Go if you need, or if you need a boost by way of hefty throw I can provide." With Scarlett within the door, Diana is careful at squeezing around her, her eyes taking stock of the room and the panel near to where Nexus was. This was all a small irritant, and what would Diana do with small irritants especially when her mother isn't looking? She takes a careful step aside, then hurls her shield at the control panel. If this isn't a big flaming pile of freak you to Doom, then she doesn't know what is. "If this does not work, we go through the walls."
*
|ROLL| Diana +rolls 1d100 for: 40
*
Diana throws her shield into the panel and destroys it in one fell swoop amid a thousand sparks.
*
Leaping back, Nexus turns a shocked look at Diana, "Please avoid destroying stuff I am trying to interface with! The feedback could be … upleasant." He frowns, "Though something is once again blocking me. For now." With that, he gives a long look at Scarlett, considering this information and filing it away: he's never seen a dimensional rift before and has no idea if he ever will, but that's useful. "I shall add a file to the Core entitled, 'Dimensional Rifts'." With that he turns and jogs towards the south (room 14), a certain sense of urgency in his step.
*
The shattering effect of Diana's lovely shield warrants a muffled laugh from the redhead. Unable to resist, she covers her hands with her mouth. "At our luck, this has either launched the forces or completely annihilated their launch pad." An approving nod to the Amazonian princess, and she glides for the doorway with an eye cast for the darkness above and the evidence of any movement in the grill under them.
*
Diana smacks her lips slightly, her head tilted just a little whilst she approaches Nexus, her gaze sincere. "My apologies. I oft do not understand the nature of you strange ones. I would enjoy further education when the time is had, unless we move on from this mortal coil.." (We, technically meant them.) But as Nexus jogs away, Diana takes a lingering look at the destroyed console, then bends to snatch her shield from it's surface to clap it upon the clasp of her back. Where they jog, she keeps up behind them, making sure that their small crew isn't followed.

"It would be better if we destroyed things only after I have discovered their function." suggests the technopath calmly, btu then the hissing…. Nexus goes immediately still: upon hearing the sound he frowns, and reaches out immediately: his circuits flare to bright white lines as he tries to encompass the whole of the castle with his mind. Why? To search for some switch some button some mechanism to turn *off* whatever just turned on. He tries to flicker through whatever he can find and trace wires and lines from beneath the room to their source. If the mechanism is purely mechanical he can do nothing, but if its electronic, there's some chance. Or not. He tries.
*
The hissing noise in the floor indicates a very definite cause for concern. Scarlett drops the chain to the ground, the hook clanking off the ground, and seizes Nexus around the waist and shoulder. There is no grace and certainly no gentleness in that act, her full strength applied as she drags him back to herself and whirls, closing on Diana. The dawning horror of her emerald eyes sweeps through the dark, she's airborne with the Inhuman whether he much fights. "Go! Something deadly's coming!" Her voice slices a sharp, ringing warning. "Retreat back to the rest of the team, now!"
*
"Understood." Diana gives a curt nod towards Nexus, but any further words were halted by the hissing sound echoing the room. As Nexus reaches out, Diana kneels down, her eyes narrowing upon the little spots upon the floor, her hand slowly stretching out to lightly touch upon the holes whenever they surface, drawing her hand back almost immediately as she sees Rogue's quick action. There was a slight hesitation, and with a quick rise and a turn and dash, she attempts to follow the two out, her arms lifting and slamming the bracelets together to erect another shield to cover their expanse as she backs out of the room with the two behind her.
*
Try as they might, all three of the members of Team Bravo begin to succumb to the gas rather quickly. It's not what one might normally think of—no man made chemical agent. It is something else entirely. One by one all three fall to the ground before they make the hallway and lose consciousness.
ELSEWHERE
Steve knows that the mission is in jeopardy. He begins to run through rooms with his shield out in front of him, bashing down doors and running by Doombots that are too busy or too taken aback to fire before he zips past them. Desperately he searches for a room. The potent gas, even with his serum fueled body does not seem to matter. He takes a hard left and comes into a hallway where he sees Nexus, Diana, and Rogue, all incapacitated. He looks to the room past them and runs in, room 13. He looks upwards into a black cavernous sky and assumes they're in an elevator. It's his way out of here. A quick look to the control panel. It's been destroyed.
Those are his last thoughts before he falls unconscious.
